Staff Reporter: Shaila Sharmin Shatabdy, daughter of New York journalist, received Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree. Shatabdy received the Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) degree at the convocation ceremony held at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia on Sunday (May 12) local time.
With the aim of becoming a lawyer in the United States, Shatabdy brightened the face of the expatriate Bangladeshi community with his parents by obtaining a professional Juris Doctor (JD) degree with honors in law after three years of study at Emory University Law School. Scored 3.85 on Academy Final Exam. Shatabdy completed her high school graduation from Brooklyn Tech in New York and a college degree from New York University (NYU). Shatabdy is the eldest daughter of New York journalist Mohammad Abul Kashem and Ferdousi Begum. His other daughter Shimin is studying in the world famous Cornell University.

The Doctor of Jurisprudence (JD) is a professional degree that primarily prepares individuals to practice law. It is the only qualifying law degree in the United States. While in other countries such as Australia, Canada and Hong Kong, both the JD degree and the undergraduate qualifying law degree lead to higher employment opportunities. Originating in the United States in the late 19th century, the JD has since replaced the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) as the country’s most common law degree. Completion of the degree usually requires three years of full-time study and is awarded to those who have successfully completed coursework and practical training in legal studies. The JD curriculum typically includes basic legal topics such as constitutional law, civil procedure, criminal law, contracts, property, and torts. There are also opportunities to specialize in areas such as international law, corporate law or public policy. After receiving the JD graduates must pass a bar exam to obtain a license to practice law.
