7 more die, measles toll reaches 915

Bangla Press Desk:  Bangladesh has recorded seven more deaths from measles and symptoms associated with the viral disease in the past 24 hours until Monday 8:00am, taking the cumulative death toll from the outbreak since March to 915, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

Five of the latest symptomatic deaths were reported in Dhaka Division, which has recorded the highest number of deaths since the outbreak began on March 15.

The DGHS, in its latest bulletin, said 50 new confirmed measles cases were detected during the 24-hour period.

Of the 915 deaths recorded since March, 99 were confirmed measles cases, while 816 people died with symptoms consistent with the disease.

Rajshahi reported 92 such deaths, Mymensingh 74, Chattogram 63, Barishal 48, Khulna 32 and Rangpur 14.

The health directorate said 981 people with measles symptoms visited hospitals across the country during the 24-hour period, with 929 requiring admission.

Dhaka Division recorded the highest number of admissions at 308, followed by Chattogram with 231 and Sylhet with 138.

Barishal reported 11 admissions, Mymensingh 49, Khulna 51, Rajshahi 27 and Rangpur 12.

With the latest admissions, the number of people hospitalised with measles and related symptoms since the outbreak began reached 125,386.

Of them, 120,913 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals, according to the DGHS.

The total number of suspected measles cases has risen to 143,778, while confirmed infections have reached 17,930.

Meanwhile, dengue continued to spread across the country, with 870 new patients hospitalised and one more death reported in the past 24 hours until Monday 8:00am, according to the DGHS.

Of the newly-hospitalised patients, 102 were reported in Barishal division, 90 in Chattogram division, 181 in Dhaka division, 77 in Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and 146 in Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) areas.

Khulna recorded 153 new admissions, while Mymensingh reported 51, Rajshahi 57 and Rangpur 13.

With the latest figures, dengue has claimed 71 lives and infected 24,848 people in Bangladesh so far this year.

The country recorded a substantially higher dengue burden last year, when the mosquito-borne disease killed 413 people and infected 102,861.

In 2024, dengue claimed 575 lives and infected 101,214 people nationwide.
