Allegations of flat occupation and assault against a government employee in Noakhali
Gias Rony, Noakhali Correspondent: A man named Kazi Aziz Ullah has alleged that his privately-owned flat building in Maijdee, under the Noakhali Municipality, was forcibly occupied and vandalized, and that he and his elderly mother were assaulted and driven out. He states that they are currently unable to return to their own home. He has called for administrative intervention and justice regarding this matter.
The victim, Kazi Aziz Ullah, leveled these allegations during a press conference held on Thursday afternoon (October 29) at the Noakhali Reporters Unity office.
Kazi Aziz Ullah is a resident of the 'Kazi Bari' (Kazi family residence) in the Stadium Para area, located in Ward No. 1 of the Noakhali Municipality. He claims that he had been living there with his family in a single-story flat building—constructed with a foundation capable of supporting five floors—situated on 5.5 decimals of land in the Maijdee Mouza (plot no. 98). The building is known as 'Aziz Tower.'
In a written statement, Kazi Aziz alleged that ABM Abdul Matin Chowdhury—a resident of Begumganj Upazila and a corrupt field worker for the Department of Social Services—purchased one decimal of land from his (Aziz’s) sister on February 9, 2023. Subsequently, Chowdhury allegedly forged documents for an additional 1.5 decimals of land and, leveraging political influence, attempted to seize a portion of the flat building. When Aziz attempted to intervene, he was subjected to multiple attacks.
Kazi Aziz stated that on May 13, 2023, a group led by Abdul Matin Chowdhury and his wife, Azizur Nahar—emboldened by the power of the then-ruling Awami League government—attacked and vandalized his property. Aziz was not at home at the time; however, his elderly mother, Sarejahan Begum, and his sister, Selina Akter, were assaulted when they tried to stop the intruders. The ground-floor unit of the building was subsequently seized. Aziz noted that he has filed a civil lawsuit in court seeking redress.
He further alleged that following the fall of the Awami League government on August 5, 2024, Abdul Matin Chowdhury fled and went into hiding, at which point Aziz managed to regain possession of the property and resume living there. However, Kazi Aziz alleges that on September 1, Abdul Matin Chowdhury—accompanied by his wife, sons, and various local members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League—attacked the house once again. During the incident, he and his elderly mother were beaten, forced out of the house, and the property was seized.
According to Kazi Aziz, members of the Chhatra League and Jubo League are currently occupying the house, preventing him from entering. He has attempted to gain access to the property several times but has failed. As a result, he and his elderly mother are enduring extreme hardship and living in a state of insecurity.Kazi Aziz Ullah has sought the intervention of the administration, law enforcement agencies, and relevant government authorities to conduct an impartial investigation into the allegations—which include the occupation of his residence, physical attacks, vandalism, and assault—and to take legal action against those involved.
However, it was not possible to obtain a statement from the accused, Abdul Matin Chowdhury, regarding these allegations, as multiple attempts to reach him via his mobile phone were unsuccessful.
