Bangladesh Launches ‘Bangla QR’ Nationwide to Boost Digital Payments
Bangladesh officially launches ‘Bangla QR’ (Quick Response) code nationwide
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh officially launched the ‘Bangla QR’ (Quick Response) code nationwide on Wednesday, marking a major step towards making digital payments simpler, more secure and universally accessible.
Introduced by Bangladesh Bank, the unified QR code platform is designed to modernise the country's payment ecosystem by enabling cashless transactions that are faster, more transparent and more cost-effective.
Customers and business owners have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will simplify digital payments while reducing both transaction time and costs.
According to the central bank, Bangla QR has been introduced as a single, interoperable digital payment platform aimed at making the country's payment system more modern, inclusive and efficient. From Wednesday, the unified QR code can be used across Bangladesh for digital transactions.
Banks and mobile financial service (MFS) providers have already completed the necessary preparations to implement the system. Under the new arrangement, businesses will no longer need to display separate QR codes for different payment service providers. Instead, a single Bangla QR code will enable customers to pay using any participating bank or mobile wallet.
Bangladesh Bank said the unified system can be used across all types of businesses, from shopping malls and supermarkets to small retail outlets and roadside vendors.
The initiative is expected to expand the use of digital payments and help establish a universal, low-cost payment infrastructure.
Industry stakeholders noted that while conventional card-based payment systems require expensive point-of-sale (POS) terminals, merchants using Bangla QR only need a printed QR code sticker to receive payments. This is expected to encourage wider adoption among small traders, street vendors and service providers who previously found digital payment infrastructure costly.
The central bank also highlighted the security benefits of the new system, saying transactions are conducted directly through customers' banking or mobile wallet applications, eliminating risks associated with card cloning or PIN theft.
Bangladesh Bank spokesperson Arif Hossain Khan said the central bank had introduced the Bangla QR framework earlier, but its nationwide implementation begins from Wednesday.
"Previously, a customer with a Rocket account could not make a payment by scanning a bKash QR code, or vice versa. That situation will no longer exist," he said.
"All existing QR codes, including those of bKash, Nagad and other providers, will gradually be replaced with Bangla QR. Customers will be able to scan a single Bangla QR code and make payments through any participating bank or mobile financial service," Khan added. Source: daily Sun
