Gun attacks in the US surrounding the Halloween holiday; death toll rises to 24

BanglaPress Desk: The death toll from a wave of violence that erupted across various parts of the United States on Halloween night has risen to at least 24, with another 94 people reported injured.

Shootings occurred in locations ranging from California to Delaware—near nightclubs, clothing stores, stadiums, and college campuses. Earlier reports had placed the death toll at six.

In Jacksonville, Florida, 13 people were shot across two separate incidents, resulting in two deaths.

Around 1:40 a.m. on Sunday, a 17-year-old girl waiting in line to attend a Halloween party was struck by a stray bullet and killed.

In another part of Jacksonville, at 3:45 a.m., gunfire broke out as guests were leaving a private party of over 100 people. Ten individuals were shot, including a 20-year-old man who died.

A 15-year-old girl who was wounded is in stable condition, while another victim remains in critical condition.

Meanwhile, in Jackson, Mississippi, a shooting at a nightclub left two people dead and four injured. In Northern California, a pregnant mother of four was killed when a gunman opened fire at a clothing store; six others were wounded in the incident.

Among the injured, two teenagers were reported to be in critical condition.

Separately, in Oklahoma City, police responded to reports of a disturbance at a trailer park during a Halloween party. One person was shot, and two others were killed after being struck by a vehicle; further details regarding this incident are not yet available. Additionally, more than two dozen people were injured in shootings near college and university campuses and event venues across the United States.

In Birmingham, Alabama, one person was killed and eight others were injured in a shooting outside Legion Field stadium. On that day, a competitive football match—known as the "Magic City Classic"—between Alabama A&M University and Alabama State University took place at the stadium.

In Bloomington, Illinois, eight people were shot near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University. A 19-year-old woman died at the scene. Police reported that the seven injured individuals were taken to local hospitals; one of them is in critical condition.

Around the same time, another shooting occurred near the Indiana University campus in Bloomington, Indiana—about 200 miles southeast of the incident in Illinois. A large crowd had gathered there for Halloween and "Homecoming" festivities. According to a statement from the Bloomington Police Department, several people were found with gunshot wounds in the city center, and seven individuals were transported to hospitals.

Additionally, police apprehended a man who was attempting to flee the scene while carrying a firearm in plain view; however, it has not been confirmed whether he used the weapon in the shooting. Experts note that while the risk of violence increases during Halloween, such incidents remain difficult to prevent.

In the Deep Ellum neighborhood of Dallas, Texas, three separate shootings occurred within a span of approximately 75 minutes, leaving at least four people dead and 15 injured. Authorities stated that no connection has been found between the incidents, and the number of casualties could potentially rise.

During a press conference on Sunday, Dallas Police Chief Eddie García stated, "We knew there would be Halloween celebrations on Saturday night, so we had a significant number of officers deployed."

Images and videos circulating on social media show people scrambling for safety on the streets of Deep Ellum during the shootings. The area is home to numerous bars, restaurants, and concert venues, but a recent rise in crime has sparked concerns regarding security in the neighborhood. At least seven bars and restaurants in Deep Ellum have closed this year, including some that had been in business for a long time. By Sunday morning, after police cordoned off parts of the area, the streets became nearly deserted. Trash lay scattered across the roads. Police Chief Como stated, “This is completely unacceptable.”
