Jamaat-e-Islami Criticises Police Action Against Bank Customers
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar has strongly condemned and protested what he described as police firing and use of force against protesting customers of Islami Bank Bangladesh PLC in Dhaka’s Motijheel area.
In a statement issued on Sunday (1 June), he alleged that peaceful demonstrators gathered in front of the bank’s head office under the banner of the “Islami Bank Customer Forum” were attacked without provocation while demanding the resignation of a newly appointed controversial chairman and protection of the bank’s interests.
He claimed that law enforcement personnel used baton charges, tear gas, and water cannons, and later opened fire, injuring several depositors who were subsequently admitted to hospital. He wished the injured a speedy recovery.
Golam Porwar said the protest was peaceful and focused on safeguarding depositors’ interests. He added that the use of force against bank customers exercising their rights was unacceptable and a violation of human rights.
He also called for the immediate cancellation of what he described as an “illegally and politically appointed” chairman and urged authorities to restore normalcy and public confidence in the bank.
