July Uprising Veteran Forced Out of New York Bangladesh Consulate

Staff Reporter: A participant in Bangladesh's July Uprising was forcibly removed from the Bangladesh Consulate in New York after protesting what he described as the distortion of the history of the July Uprising. The incident has sparked discussion among members of the Bangladeshi diaspora.

The confrontation occurred on the evening of August 7 during a program organized by the Bangladesh Consulate in New York to mark the second anniversary of the July-August Mass Uprising. The dispute centered on a documentary screened during the event, which July Uprising participant Nur Hossain alleged contained inaccurate historical information.

According to those present, Nur Hossain interrupted the documentary screening and accused its producers of distorting the historical record. He argued that during the July movement, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir had publicly stated that the movement belonged to the students and that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) had no involvement in it.

Nur Hossain questioned why the documentary now portrayed the movement as a BNP-led initiative, saying that such a depiction contradicted earlier public statements.

Witnesses said his remarks angered several BNP supporters attending the event. A verbal altercation followed between Nur Hossain and several attendees. As tensions escalated, BNP activists protested his comments and eventually pushed him out of the venue.

The Bangladesh Consulate had organized the event at its New York offices to commemorate the second anniversary of the July-August Mass Uprising. However, the disagreement over the documentary's portrayal of the historical events overshadowed the event proceedings.

The incident has drawn reactions from many attendees, who expressed concern that a program dedicated to commemorating such a significant political and historical event became the scene of a dispute over the interpretation and presentation of its history.
