NBR Achieves Historic Revenue Collection Milestone in FY26

Bangla Press Desk:   The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has recorded the highest revenue collection in the country’s history during the first 11 months of the current fiscal year (FY2025–26), mobilising Tk360,642 crore up to May 2026.

According to a press release issued by the NBR on Sunday, revenue collection during the July–May period surpassed all previous records and stood Tk32,856.22 crore higher than the Tk327,785.78 crore collected in the same period of FY2024–25.

The growth rate in revenue collection for the first 11 months of FY2025–26 was 10.02 per cent compared to the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.

For FY2025–26, the revised annual revenue target has been set at Tk503,000 crore. Against this target, the NBR collected Tk360,642 crore by May, while the 11-month target was Tk442,084 crore—meaning collections fell short by Tk81,442 crore, achieving 81.58 per cent of the target.

During the period, customs revenue grew by 7.08 per cent, value-added tax (VAT) by 10.05 per cent, and income tax by 12.54 per cent.

The NBR further stated that total revenue collection rose to Tk389,953 crore as of June 20, 2026, following the collection of Tk29,311 crore in the first 20 days of June. This figure has already surpassed the total Tk370,843.03 crore collected in the whole of FY2024–25.

The revenue authority expressed optimism that an additional Tk25,000 crore could be collected in the remaining days of June, potentially pushing total revenue collection to a record Tk415,000 crore by the end of the fiscal year.

Even if achieved, the projected total would still remain Tk88,000 crore below the annual target, though it would exceed last year’s collection by Tk43,157 crore, the release added. To accelerate revenue mobilisation, the NBR has formed three task forces comprising field-level officials from the income tax, VAT and customs wings. These groups are working to expedite pending cases before appellate authorities, tribunals, the High Court and the Supreme Court, while also promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms to boost tax recovery.

The NBR also highlighted ongoing measures to detect tax evasion and recover lost revenue, dispose of automatically selected audit cases, strengthen monitoring of tax and VAT deducted at source, enhance post-clearance audits and risk management at customs houses, and conduct coordinated income tax and VAT audits of high-risk taxpayers.

The authority said these initiatives have added momentum to revenue administration and reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying efforts to mobilise resources needed for national development.
