Proposal to increase LP gas prices two to three times over
BanglaPress Desk: The Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has initiated a public hearing regarding proposals to increase the price of LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders for consumers and to raise the commission rates for businesses.
The hearing took place on Thursday (October 29) at the BIAM Auditorium in Eskaton, Dhaka. During the proceedings, importers, distributors, and retailers demanded a substantial increase in their current commission rates, citing rising operational costs.
According to applications submitted to the BERC, importers have proposed increasing their existing commissions by two to two-and-a-half times, while distributors have requested a threefold increase.
Currently, the commission for a 12 kg LPG cylinder stands at 191 Taka. Companies have requested the following increases: Omera to 478 Taka, Delta to 360 Taka, Petromax to 349 Taka, and the Meghna Group to 300 Taka.
Additionally, distributors have requested an increase in their commission from 50 Taka to 150 Taka, and retailers have sought an increase from 45 Taka to 70 Taka. If these proposals are approved, the price of LPG for consumers will rise significantly.
At present, 30 companies are registered to import LPG into the country, six of which are actively engaged in regular imports. Furthermore, 12 other companies procure gas from these importers and handle the cylinder-filling process at their own facilities.
Previously, on October 4, the BERC had raised the price of a 12 kg LPG cylinder by 252 Taka, setting it at 1,837 Taka. At the same time, the price per kilogram of LPG was set at 153.06 Taka, and the price of autogas was increased from 73.09 Taka to 84.62 Taka per liter.
