Protests to Intensify Unless Home, Energy Ministers Step Down: Nahid
BanglaPress Desk: Md. Nahid Islam, Convener of the Jatiya Nagorik Party (NCP) and Chief Whip of the Opposition, has warned that protests will intensify if the Home Minister and the Energy Minister do not resign.
He stated, "Over the past week, our activists have reached out to various parts of Dhaka city and spoken with the people. The public is suffering immensely due to soaring commodity prices, as well as a lack of electricity and gas. Law and order have collapsed, and the people of Bangladesh are no longer secure."
He made these remarks on Friday afternoon (October 30) at a mass protest rally organized by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of the NCP, held in front of the National Museum at Shahbagh in the capital.
Nahid Islam asserted, "The Home Minister and the Energy Minister must take responsibility for their failures and resign. If they refuse, our protests will grow larger. We will march to surround Tarique Rahman to ensure our demands are met."
He further demanded the dissolution of the current committee formed for constitutional reform, calling instead for the establishment of a 'Constitutional Reform Council.' He remarked, "It is evident that Tarique Rahman has no plan for governing the country—his only 'plans' involve corruption, extortion, and illegal land grabbing. We are witnessing the rise of a new form of autocracy within the BNP."
Nahid Islam also noted, "There is talk that the ousted autocrat might return to the country in December. The BNP has failed to protect its own members in the past; how could they possibly protect the general public? There is a concerted effort to destabilize Bangladesh—through border killings, conspiracies involving the Hindu community, and by inciting unrest in the Hill Tracts."
