Bangla Press Desk: Additional Commissioner of Customs Tanjina Raees has been dismissed from her job for going to Australia without taking leave. This information was revealed in a notification signed by NBR Chairman (Acting) Ahsan Habib.
Earlier, on July 9, 2025, this female officer was temporarily suspended. Tanjina Raees was last working as the First Secretary (VAT Monitoring and Taxpayer Services) of the NBR.
The notification said that Tanjina Raees was granted one month of earned leave on November 20, 2024 and allowed to go to Thailand. She started enjoying the leave from December 8 of that year. Even after the leave ended, she did not join the workplace, but on February 5, 2025, the NBR sent her a show cause notice. In response, she said in an e-mail that she had previously applied for an extension of the leave period by another 3 months.
However, the authorities said that she did not apply according to the correct rules and regulations. On March 4, 2025, her leave application was rejected and she was ordered to join work immediately, but she did not join work. She was temporarily suspended on July 9, 2025, as she was absent from work for a long time, disobeying the orders of her superior officer. A departmental case was filed against her for being absent from work for more than 60 days without permission, on charges of 'misconduct' and 'absconding'. As the accused officer did not submit a written reply within the specified time, NBR member Dr. Mohd. Al Amin Pramanik was appointed as the investigation officer. All the allegations against Tanjina Raees were proven in the investigation. After the allegations were proven, a decision was made to dismiss her from service and a second show cause notice was given. But she did not respond even within 7 working days. The Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC) agreed with the decision to dismiss her. Later, the President also approved the decision to impose this heavy penalty.
According to NBR sources, the husband of this officer of the BCS (Customs and Excise) cadre has settled in Australia. This officer was working as Joint Commissioner (Current Duty) in the Customs, Excise and VAT Commissionerate, Dhaka (West) in 2018. Towards the end of that year, he went to Macquarie University, Australia, on a scholarship to study for the ‘Masters of Commerce with a Specialized in Finance Course’ course. The Internal Revenue Department granted him educational leave from December 31, 2018 to June 30, 2020 to pursue this Master’s. After completing his Masters, he returned to the country. The source further said that after coming from Australia, he went to Thailand in September 2024 for the treatment of his child. The Internal Revenue Department gave him 15 days of leave from September 22, 2024 to October 5, 2024 for the treatment of his child. From there, he left for Australia without taking leave and did not return home. He did not return. He was dismissed for being absent from work and running away without taking leave. It is reported that he is studying in Australia and is living there permanently.
