Ema Alice: The United States is aware of the ban on the political activities of the Awami League in Bangladesh. In response to a question during a regular briefing on Wednesday (May 14), State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott said they are “aware” of the interim government’s decision.
Pigott stated, “We are aware that the interim government has suspended the Awami League’s political activities until the Special Tribunal concludes trials of the party and its leaders.”
He added, “We do not support any specific political party in Bangladesh. We support a free and democratic process, and transparent and fair legal proceedings for all.”
The U.S. spokesperson called on Bangladesh, along with all countries worldwide, to ensure the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly, and association.
When asked about allegations that the interim government is encouraging extremism, Pigott said, “We value our 50-year partnership with Bangladesh and aim to deepen that relationship by working with the interim government.”
Notably, on Monday, the interim government issued a notification stating that all political activities of the Awami League will be suspended during ongoing trials at the International Crimes Tribunal.
