Estonia plans to build 150 bunkers along its border with Russia
Bangla Press Desk : Estonia plans to construct approximately 150 bunkers in its northeastern region, which borders Russia. This initiative is part of the Baltic nation's effort to bolster its defense capabilities amid growing regional security concerns. Additionally, Tallinn intends to deploy a combat-ready brigade near the Russian border.
Last Wednesday (October 28), Estonian Defense Minister Martin Herem announced that these bunkers would be built in the Ida-Virumaa region in the country's northeast.
According to a report by Estonia’s national broadcaster, ERR, about 100 of the bunkers will be constructed on state-owned land, while the remaining 50 are planned for private and municipal property.
However, the Defense Minister did not provide specific details regarding the design of the bunkers or their intended use.
As concerns over regional security intensify, Estonia and its Baltic neighbors are placing greater emphasis on military preparedness and the protection of their civilian populations.
NATO officials have issued warnings regarding Russian drone incursions, airspace violations, acts of sabotage, and other hybrid threats. In light of this shifting security landscape, several European nations are also strengthening their air defense systems.
Following the launch of Russia’s full-scale military invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, NATO has deployed additional troops along its eastern flank. The military alliance has also enhanced its readiness for rapid response to potential threats.
Earlier this month, the Estonian military announced plans to permanently relocate a combat-ready brigade closer to the Russian border.
Under this plan, the country’s 1st Brigade will be moved to a new, expanded military base located less than 50 kilometers from the border.
The Estonian military stated that this initiative is aimed at increasing the country's capacity to respond to a potential Russian attack.
The construction of bunkers and the relocation of the military brigade are part of a broader effort by Estonia to strengthen its defense posture in the Baltic region. These measures reflect the priority these nations are placing on regional security and military readiness.
