Ema Alice: In a heartbreaking incident in New York City, a 7-month-old baby girl was killed after being struck by a stray bullet in East Williamsburg on Wednesday afternoon.
According to police and family members, the infant was outside in a stroller with her parents when gunfire suddenly erupted. Initially, they mistook the sound for fireworks. Moments later, it became clear that gunmen riding a motorized moped had opened fire into a crowd.
One of the bullets struck the baby in the head, leaving her critically injured. She was later pronounced dead. Her younger brother was also slightly injured in the incident.
“My daughter was completely innocent. She did not deserve this,” the child’s mother said. The family shared that the baby had just begun saying “mama” and had started crawling.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the shooting may be gang-related. The suspects fled the scene on a moped after opening fire and later crashed into a vehicle. One suspect has been taken into custody for questioning.
Police believe the infant was not the intended target but was struck while among bystanders. Authorities are continuing a manhunt for the second suspect.
The grieving family has called for justice following the tragic killing.
