Bangla Press Desk: A major political shift has occurred in the United States midterm elections. President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has lost control of the Senate, with the Democrats securing a majority by flipping four seats—a victory that, as recently as last year, was considered nearly impossible for the party.
This win paves the way for Democratic leader Chuck Schumer to once again serve as the Senate Majority Leader. Furthermore, the party gains significant authority to oversee the Trump administration, influence administrative and judicial appointments, and shape legislation.
To regain control of the Senate, the Democrats needed to pick up at least four seats; they achieved this by defeating Republicans in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, and Ohio.
In North Carolina, former Governor Roy Cooper defeated Republican candidate Michael Whatley. In South Carolina, pediatrician Annie Andrews prevailed over Republican Darlene Graham. In Texas, state representative James Talarico defeated Attorney General Ken Paxton, while in Ohio, former Senator Sherrod Brown emerged victorious.
Analysts view these election results as a political rejection of Donald Trump. Throughout October, Trump had campaigned extensively on behalf of Republican candidates; however, his declining popularity proved to be a major obstacle for them.
