BB warns against circulation of ‘sample notes’ on social media
Bangla Press Desk: The Bangladesh Bank (BB) on Monday issued a special warning against the growing circulation and promotional use of “sample notes” designed to resemble genuine currency on social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.
Such practices, it warned, could contribute to the spread of counterfeit notes, undermine the country’s currency management system.
Furthermore, the bank said that spreading false, misleading or rumour-based information through digital platforms may also be treated as a punishable offence under Section 25 of the Cyber Security Act.
In a press release issued on Monday, the central bank said it has recently observed the circulation of various videos and images on social media featuring sample notes that closely resemble genuine banknotes in design and size.
In some cases, the imitation notes are even larger than the original currency. These materials are reportedly being used for self-promotion, commercial campaigns and content creation, it added.
Bangladesh Bank noted that there have also been instances where paper made in the likeness of real currency has been used in markets and public spaces for promotional purposes.
The central bank emphasised that producing imitation currency notes, using them in promotional activities, or displaying them in online videos is legally punishable. Under Section 489(6) of the Bangladesh Penal Code, any individual or institution that prepares, uses or distributes any document, paper or object resembling a banknote in circulation and capable of causing confusion commits a criminal offence.
Legal action will be taken against those found involved in such activities, it said.
Bangladesh Bank has urged the public to remain vigilant in preventing the circulation of counterfeit currency and to refrain from creating, sharing or promoting misleading content, or engaging in any unauthorised activities involving currency notes.
