Bringing Hasina back may not be possible even if convicted
Bangla Press Desk:  Law Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Tuesday that even if Sheikh Hasina is tried, it may not be possible to bring her back to Bangladesh. He made the remarks while addressing the inaugural screening of Prothom Alo’s investigative documentary titled “Bloody Highway: Jatrabari Massacre”, held at the newspaper’s Karwan Bazar office in Dhaka, marking the first anniversary of the July mass uprising. Asif Nazrul said, “We all know who the chief accused is, who the main perpetrator is. I don’t know if I should say it like this, but I believe her final days will be spent in India. I don’t think we will ever get her back.” He added, “If our only achievement is that she lives on being hated in the hearts of Bangladeshi people that is still no small accomplishment. So much hatred, so much pain, so much rage – from this collective anger and frustration, we can hope that reforms will ensure such a ruler is never born again in this country. We are trying our best, and we’re not falling short in our efforts.”
Referring to the indiscriminate killings during the mass uprising, Asif Nazrul said, “Some actions are forbidden even on the battlefield. It is not permissible to shoot those who are fleeing, unarmed, or writhing in the agony of death. These actions are considered war crimes under any law in the world. But we witnessed people being shot dead while fleeing during the July uprising. People in their death throes, begging for life, were shot at point-blank range, shot in the head, and their bodies set ablaze.” He further said that Sheikh Hasina had turned the police into an inhuman, reckless, and terrifying force. “How inhuman must one be to do such a thing? No other force, perhaps apart from the Israelis in their treatment of Palestinians, operates in this manner,” he said. “Our disciplined police force, funded by our taxpayers, has been turned into something resembling the Israeli military – capable of killing us in such ways,” he added. Emphasising the government’s commitment to ensuring a fair trial, the law adviser said, “Had we followed Sheikh Hasina’s standard in delivering justice, the trial would have been completed within four to five months. We are conducting the proceedings through thorough investigation and legal amendments, so that the trial is accepted both at home and abroad, and not questioned 20 or 30 years down the line. Sometimes, it feels like the day the trial ends will be the most peaceful day of my life.”
Asif Nazrul expressed hope that the trial against Sheikh Hasina would be completed during the tenure of the current government. This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
