Condemnation and Outrage over ICE shooting of U.S Citizen
Kousholy Ema: Federal immigration officers reportedly shot and wounded U.S. citizen Carlos Jimenez during an enforcement stop near a school bus route, sparking Democratic outrage. Civil rights groups condemned the shooting as an example of excessive force. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that an internal investigation is underway to determine whether agents followed protocol.
Attorneys for Jimenez claimed he was backing away and warning about nearby children when shot. DHS claimed he reversed his vehicle toward officers, prompting self-defense fire.
DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said, “An ICE officer, fearing for his life, fired defensive shots at the vehicle. The subject fled the scene and abandoned his vehicle.”
McLaughlin added, “During the stop, an unknown individual, not the target, in a vehicle pulled in front of the officers. Officers ordered the driver to leave the scene. As the driver began to pull away, the car stopped and attempted to run officers over by reversing directly at them without stopping.”

Court documents state that Jimenez was told to leave before his car moved toward the officer. Jimenez’s lawyers claimed his assault charge is meant to justify an unlawful shooting.
Attorney Cynthia Santiago stated, “He was telling them, ‘Excuse me. Can you guys please, you know, please wrap this up.’ And immediately, the masked agent pulls out a gun and exchanges some words.” Homeland Security officials claimed rising threats justified the officer’s reaction. Rep. Norma Torres (D-CA) has argued the incident is an example of risks of racial profiling.
McLaughlin said, “This is another example of the threats our ICE officers are facing day-in and day-out as they risk their lives to enforce the law and arrest criminals. ICE officers now face a 1000% increase in assaults against them including cars being used as weapons and death threats against our agents are up 8000%.”
McLaughlin added “This violence must end. Let me be clear: Anyone who assaults, impedes, obstructs, or threatens the lives of federal officers will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
