Connecticut’s resident Ameer Nasir admits to embezzling $3.5 million from Amazon

Trumbull man admitted to defrauding Amazon

Noman Sabit: By pleading guilty to a wire fraud offense in Bridgeport federal court, a Trumbull man admitted on Friday to defrauding Amazon out of $3,547,090.

Now, 25-year-old Ameer Nasir must pay it all back in restitution, according to a report from the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut. Nasir is out on a $300,000 bond but faces up to 20 years behind bars when he is sentenced back in Bridgeport on May 29. Court documents and statements reveal that Amazon Logistics, an Amazon subsidiary, contracts with a range of interstate trucking businesses to transport both empty trailers and trailers packed with heavy loads of freight across the country.

These trucks move tons of inventory between cities, warehouses and fulfillment centers run by Amazon.

Prosecutors say Nasir registered 23 trucking businesses with Amazon Logistics and that one of the accounts was created in the name of Nasir’s business, Pak Express Transport, LLC.

However, some of the accounts were established under false names or by fraudulently using the names and identifying information of other trucking or transportation companies without the knowledge of their operators. Between December 2019 and February 2021, Nasir used these accounts to sign up for over 1,000 transportation assignments with Amazon Logistics.

According to prosecutors, he manipulated information in Amazon Logistics’ transportation management system, misrepresenting that he had completed trailer movements when he had not.

Nasir then submitted false invoices to Amazon Logistics, which he was subsequently paid for.

This scheme is how Nasir defrauded the international company out of several million dollars.

The case is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Amazon is also aiding in the investigation.
