Court orders trial against e-orange owner, five others in fraud case
Bangla Press Desk: A Dhaka court on Monday ordered the start of the trial after taking cognisance of the charges against six individuals, including Sonia Mehjabin, owner of the controversial e-commerce platform E-Orange.shop, in a case filed over alleged embezzlement through fraud.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jamshed Alam framed the charges and issued arrest warrants for the accused, who remain absconding.
Confirming the development, counsel for the plaintiff, Gazi Hasan Mahmud, said that summons had initially been issued after the case was filed. Subsequently, arrest warrants, property attachment orders and newspaper notices were issued against the accused
Although one of the accused, Amanullah, surrendered before the court and secured bail, he failed to appear on the day the charges were framed. The court therefore framed charges in his absence.
The other accused in the case are Sonia’s husband, Mashukur Rahman Sumon, chief adviser and director of E-Orange.shop; patron Sheikh Sohel Rana; Chief Executive Officer Amanullah Chowdhhury; and Directors Zayedul Firoz and Naznin Nahar Bithi.
Earlier on 21 November 2024, Gazi Firoz Kaiser filed the case, alleging that the accused had lured customers by advertising various products online at unusually low prices.
According to the case statement, the plaintiff paid a total of Tk585,700 between 23 May and 3 June 2021 to purchase three motorcycles and a laptop, having been attracted by the offers. Although the company had promised delivery within 45 days, the products were never supplied.
Despite repeated demands, the accused failed to deliver the goods. When the plaintiff visited the E-Orange office on 14 November 2014, he was allegedly threatened with death instead of being refunded his money.
