DRU has played a significant role in achieving the country's democracy: Rizvi

Bangla Press Desk: BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi stated, "The Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) has played a significant role in the realization of democracy in Bangladesh."
He remarked, "There was a time when freedom of expression was suppressed; speaking out was considered a sin, and voicing anything against the government was deemed a grave offense.
Yet, whenever we found even a sliver of space to speak, they never hesitated to publicize and publish it. They, too, faced immense pressure. Many of them were harassed under draconian laws—such as the Digital Security Act—and had to endure imprisonment and persecution."
Ruhul Kabir Rizvi made these remarks on Thursday (September 10) while inaugurating the 31st-anniversary celebration of the DRU, held at the organization's premises in the capital's Segunbagicha area.
He added, "Against that backdrop, we are experiencing an environment of freedom today. Here, there is room for everyone—those in power and those in the opposition—to voice their criticisms openly.
They can offer constructive criticism of the government's actions. This is how a democratic society and state are built, and the media serves as a vital pillar of that conviction."
