Fraudulent activities like food adulteration unacceptable: DMP commissioner
Bangla Press Desk: Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Sheikh Md Sajjat Ali has said that fraudulent activities like food adulteration are unacceptable under any circumstances and called for strict monitoring to ensure that prices of essential commodities remain within the tolerance level of ordinary people.
Speaking to journalists on Friday afternoon in the Moulvibazar area under Chawkbazar Police Station in the capital, the DMP commissioner emphasised that the country must be governed by the rule of law.
He urged officials responsible for market supervision to perform their duties with honesty and sincerity, ensuring that no trader raises prices unreasonably or creates artificial shortages through hoarding.
“No one should be harassed, but wrongdoers will not be spared,” he said.
The commissioner stressed that protecting consumers’ rights is the responsibility of the state and the administration. He called on businesspeople to return to lawful and ethical earnings, noting that while it is normal to purchase a product at Tk50 and sell it at a reasonable profit, doubling the price without justification is unethical. He added that even a slight increase in the price of a commodity should not be used as an excuse to charge excessive rates. Citing an example, he said that a marginal rise in the price of lemons cannot justify selling them at Tk200.
Highlighting the broader role of commerce, he said that business is not solely about profit but is also linked to public welfare. With honesty, fairness, and a sense of responsibility, he added, the market will remain stable and people will feel at ease.
