One person caught while fleeing with meat from a slaughtered stolen cow
Bangla Press Desk : In Patiya, Chittagong, local residents apprehended a man along with his CNG-run auto-rickshaw as he attempted to flee with the meat of a cow that had been stolen and slaughtered under the cover of darkness. Two other individuals managed to escape.
The incident occurred early Thursday morning (October 29) in the South Srimai Hill area of Kachuwai Union. The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Abdur Rahim, was caught by locals, subjected to a beating, and subsequently handed over to the police.
Abdur Rahim is the son of Abdus Salam from Chanpur village in Pukuria Union, Banshkhali Upazila. The owner of the slaughtered cow, Aiyub Mia, stated that the animal was worth approximately 70,000 taka.
Abdur Rahim, who works as a CNG auto-rickshaw driver, told those present that two butchers from the Shantirhat area—Ledu and Sohel—had hired his vehicle on Wednesday night to travel to the Srimai area. Early the next morning, following a call from Ledu and Sohel, he returned to South Srimai with his auto-rickshaw. The two men then loaded sacks containing the cow’s meat—including its head—into the vehicle.
According to locals, the driver was intercepted while attempting to escape with the meat. While his two accomplices managed to flee, the driver was beaten by the crowd. The owner of the cow was later identified following an announcement made over the local mosque’s loudspeaker.
The cow’s owner, Aiyub Mia, explained that he had been raising the animal under a share-rearing arrangement (*borga*) with another person. Its current market value is estimated at around 70,000 taka.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Patiya Police Station, Ziaul Haque, stated that police were dispatched to the scene upon receiving the report. The matter is being treated with seriousness, and appropriate legal action is being taken.
