Post-uprising lawsuits will be reviewed to end harassment: Home Minister
Bangla Press Desk: The newly elected government will review the “unjust” and “unnecessary” lawsuits filed during the interim government’s tenure, and take corrective measures in this regard, said Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed on Monday.
He also said that the BNP-led government would form a separate commission for investigating the 2009 BDR carnage. A new probe report will be prepared independent from the one completed during the interim administration’s term, he noted.
Addressing a press briefing held at the Secretariat, the BNP leader alleged that a vested group filed “unjust” lawsuits against a number of people, including wealthy businessmen and eminent personalities, after the 5 August 2024 government changeover.
These individuals evidently had no ties to the alleged incident under all possible scenarios, but still they were implicated simply to cause harassment.
The concerned authorities have been instructed to examine the cases and take appropriate corrective measures, he said after holding a meeting with police officers.
Officials must work to establish the rule of law, he added.
The days of “mob pressure” have ended, he further said. If a group takes to streets to press home a “legal demand,” they would have to submit a written memorandum to the appropriate authorities.
The days of realising demands through road blockades have ended, he added, referring to the widespread practice of blocking roads and holding general people hostage to press home demands during the interim government’s tenure.
