Pregnant teen killed in U.S. car crash, Indian national faces deportation

ndian national named Tarsem Singh has been indicted on felony charges

Minara Helen: A 33-year-old Indian national named Tarsem Singh has been indicted on felony charges and is facing deportation from the US after being arrested in a high-speed car chase with the police last month. According to a report by the US-based news outlet, WDTN, the chase ended in a collision with another car which caused the death of a 17-year-old pregnant teen and her unborn child in Drake County in the US State of Ohio. According to prosecutors, Singh was driving at 100 miles per hour at the time of the crash. A Darke County grand jury prosecuted Tarsem Singh on numerous counts on March 23. The counts include the unintentional killing of another person following reckless, careless, and negligent behaviour. The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has announced that Singh has been placed on an immigration detainer. His bond has been set at $1 million.

He has been indicted on several charges, including two counts each of felony involuntary manslaughter, reckless homicide, and aggravated vehicular homicide for the deaths of 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes and her unborn child. Tarsem Singh also faces charges of felony vehicular assault and failure to comply with an order or signal of a police officer.

According to the Drake County Sheriff's office, the incident occurred on February 16, 2026 after a deputy clocked Tarsem Singh driving a Range Rover Velar at the speed of 100 miles per hour. According to the authorities, upon being signalled to pull over, Singh allegedly sped up rather than complying. This started a high-speed police pursuit which lasted for five miles, and ended with Singh crashing into a Jeep Cherokee. The crash took place as the two vehicles made their way onto Ohio State Route 47.

The collision caused the death of a passenger, 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes from the city of Sidney in Ohio. Following the collision, she was thrown out of the car and was later declared dead. The driver of the vehicle Holmes was in, was also injured but remained conscious.

Singh was later taken into custody, and was subsequently airlifted by a CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital.

WDTN news reported that Singh appeared via video link, assisted by an interpreter at the Darke County court hearing this week. Judge Travis Fliehman, read out all the charges against him. When the judge asked if Singh was a US citizen, he answered saying "no."

After being indicted, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) stated via a post on X that Singh had been placed on an immigration detainer. Singh's bond is set at $1 million. He is also on an asylum case, meaning if convicted he could be deported.
