Referendum Verdict Being Ignored by Govt, Says Jamaat

Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, the main opposition party in parliament, on Sunday accused the BNP-led government of ignoring the referendum verdict by relying on its parliamentary majority, warning of a fresh movement unless it immediately implements the July National Charter.
“The government that ignores 70% of the people’s votes cannot be considered a pro-people government,” Jamaat Joint Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan said while addressing a programme at Science Lab intersection in the capital.
Rafiqul said that people sacrificed their lives during the July mass uprising and later voted ‘Yes’ in the referendum in support of reforms to state institutions. He said the government must be compelled to implement the referendum verdict in line with the July National Charter through a mass movement.
Citing the caretaker government system as an example, he said the BNP initially opposed the demand for its introduction but was eventually forced to accept it after facing public pressure.
“Time is still available. Accept our demand in line with the July National Charter; otherwise, you will face a similar consequence,” he warned.
He also accused the Yunus-led interim government of taking a biased stance in favour of the BNP, alleging that a conspiracy was being plotted against Jamaat.
“No one will be able to eliminate Jamaat or stop its progress,” he added.
