Seven JnU students injured after alleged assault inside traffic police box in Old Dhaka
Bangla Press Desk: Seven students of Jagannath University (JnU), including a female student, were injured after allegedly being taken inside a traffic police box and assaulted by an assistant sergeant and several traffic volunteers at Dayaganj intersection in Old Dhaka on Monday afternoon.
The incident sparked immediate outrage among JnU students, who marched to the Dayaganj traffic police box and surrounded it in protest.
As tensions rose, a joint team of police and army personnel intervened to control the situation and detained four traffic volunteers believed to be involved in the assault.
According to witnesses and injured students, the incident occurred around noon when a Magura-bound Saad Super bus carrying JnU students stopped at the Dayaganj traffic signal.
A few students stepped off the bus to help ease congestion in the area. At that moment, three traffic volunteers approached them and demanded to know their identities.
A heated exchange followed, after which the volunteers allegedly dragged several students inside the police box and beat them with batons.
At least seven students were injured in the assault. They have been identified as Talha (CSE-20), Al-Amin (Accounting and Information Systems-19), Sohel (Sociology-19), Chaiti Alam (Sociology-15), Mohan Khandakar (Sociology-19), Sohan Pramanik (Islamic Studies-15), and Al-Amin (Chemistry-19).
Several of them were taken to Dayaganj Labaid Hospital for emergency treatment due to serious injuries.
Wari Division Deputy Commissioner Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the confrontation, saying an argument between students and traffic personnel escalated into a scuffle.
“Students later surrounded the police box in protest. We arrived at the scene, calmed the situation, and detained four people. An investigation is underway, and necessary action will follow,” he added.
CSE student Talha, one of the victims, said that some seniors asked the traffic personnel to allow their bus to pass through the congestion.
However, the volunteers became aggressive and started arguing.
“Later, they dragged us into the police box and started beating us with batons,” he said.
Another injured student, Sohan Pramanik from the Islamic Studies department, said he went to the police box after hearing that juniors were being beaten.
“As soon as I reached the spot, they pulled me inside and hit me repeatedly. My forehead split open,” he said.
JnU Proctor Professor Muhammad Tajammul Haque said that he rushed to the scene with the proctorial team after being informed of the incident.
“With support from police and army personnel, four individuals involved in the attack were detained. Appropriate action will be taken against them,” he said.
