The Constitution is obligated to ensure the security of followers of all religions: Home Minister

Bangla Press Desk: Calling for respect toward the beliefs and religious practices of people of all faiths, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmad stated that the beliefs, customs, and rituals of any religious group are deeply cherished by its followers. Therefore, everyone should be respectful toward the religious beliefs of those belonging to other faiths.
He made these remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a Sharadiya Durgotsab (Durga Puja) celebration held at the Banani grounds in the capital on Friday (October 16).
Emphasizing the importance of "religious harmony," the Home Minister suggested using this term instead of "communal harmony." He noted that all citizens of Bangladesh are entitled to equal rights, and no discrimination based on religion is permissible.
"None of us are here as members of separate 'communities' [in the sense of distinct, segregated groups]," he said. "Our nation's laws do not categorize people into such separate communities. We are all citizens of Bangladesh, and we all possess equal rights."
The Home Minister added that the Constitution of Bangladesh grants followers of all religions the right to practice their faith freely, establish places of worship, and observe religious rituals.
Consequently, it is the responsibility of all to ensure the freedom to celebrate religious festivals.
Regarding the Durga Puja celebrations, he noted that this year has seen the highest number of *puja mandaps* (worship venues), the largest government allocation, and the longest holiday period. He further assured that the government would provide support to ensure that the joy of religious festivals can be celebrated without any hindrance.
The event was attended by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md. Ali Hossain Fakir, various ambassadors and high commissioners, representatives from diplomatic missions, and delegates from several organizations based in the Banani and Gulshan areas.
