Zubayer Rahman to become 26th chief justice
Bangla Press Desk: Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury is set to assume office as the 26th chief justice of Bangladesh, replacing incumbent Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed.
Sources said on Monday that the government would issue a gazette notification at any time. Chowdhury will take the oath of office on 28 December.
Under the Constitution, Chief Justice Dr Syed Refaat Ahmed will retire on 27 December after reaching the age of 67. He has already concluded his judicial career and is currently in Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah.
In the absence of Dr Ahmed, Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury has been serving as acting chief justice.
Chowdhury enrolled as a lawyer in the judge court in 1985 and in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court in 1987. The government appointed him as an additional judge of the High Court Division on 27 August, 2003, and confirmed his position two years later. President Mohammed Shahabuddin appointed him as a judge of the Appellate Division on 12 August, 2024.
Chowdhury earned his LLB (Hons) and LLM degrees from the University of Dhaka and later completed a master’s degree in international law in the United Kingdom.
