14 killed in Russian drone attack on Ukrainian railway station

BanglaPress Desk: At least 14 people have been killed in a Russian drone strike on a busy railway station platform in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro. Another 14 people were injured in the attack on Thursday; six of them are reported to be in critical condition.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the incident as a "horrific attack" and urged Kyiv’s allies to take stern action against Russia. This information was reported by the news agency AFP.
Oleksandr Hanzha, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, provided the casualty figures on Thursday afternoon. An 11-year-old child is among the injured. Many others sustained severe injuries from shrapnel; one victim reportedly lost both legs.
Zelenskyy stated that a regular local train and a long-distance passenger train were stationed at the Dnipro railway station platform when the attack occurred. Images released by Ukraine’s emergency services show bodies lying on the platform, with rescue workers attending to the victims. The images also reveal passenger trains with shattered windows and signs of fire damage.
Condemning the attack, Zelenskyy asserted that as long as Russia’s war continues, sanctions imposed on Moscow and the apparatus supporting its war effort should not be eased. He further called on Ukraine’s allies to adopt a tougher stance against Russia.
Amidst this, efforts are underway to maintain a limited ceasefire around the war-torn city of Oleshky, which has been under Russian occupation since 2022. Residents of the city have long faced a severe shortage of food, water, and medicine.
On Thursday (October 29), both nations confirmed that the local ceasefire had entered its third day. Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine’s human rights ombudsman, announced that he had set off for Oleshky, accompanied by a Ukrainian delegation, traveling via Belarus and Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron has reacted strongly to the Russian attack in Dnipro. He emphasized the need for a broader and more permanent ceasefire, going beyond the limited, localized truce centered around Oleshky.
This attack—which targeted civilians and a passenger train—has once again highlighted the horrors of the ongoing war in Ukraine. At the same time, calls for effective measures to end the conflict and for sustained international pressure on Russia have grown stronger.
