Bangla Press Desk: Demanding the introduction of a zakat-based economy instead of an interest-based economy, Jamaat-e-Islami MP from Rajshahi-1 constituency Mujibur Rahman said that the economy can run without interest. The interest-based economy needs to be 'written in the grave' in Bangladesh.
He said this while participating in the general discussion on the proposed budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the National Parliament on Sunday (June 28).
Mujibur said, 'If Medina becomes Islam, interest must be stopped. There was zakat in Medina's budget. Zakat must be introduced.'
Criticizing the absence of the word 'zakat' in the national budget, this Jamaat MP said, the Finance Minister has raised many issues in his 34-page budget speech. But there is no mention of a zakat-based economy. Our Finance Minister is from Chittagong. I know there is a culture of reading the Quran and Hadith there. When the Home Minister occasionally reads verses, it seems that he has created that culture. I did not see our Finance Minister utter the word zakat here.
Mujibur also objected to debt dependence. He said, "It is possible to borrow, but God does not like dying in debt. You have to pay off the debt and die." Commenting that there is no opportunity to minimize the national debt, he added, "You can borrow; but you cannot die in debt." Source: jugantor
