The ongoing unrest in the garment industry is highly concerning: Jamaat Ameer
Bangla Press Desk: Describing the current situation in the country’s ready-made garment (RMG) industry as "highly concerning," Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has urged the government to take immediate, sustainable measures to protect both the owners and the workers.
The Jamaat Ameer shared these remarks in a post on his Facebook page on Sunday evening (November 1).
In his post, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman stated that the ongoing instability in the garment industry is deeply worrying. The sector—the country’s primary export industry—is currently navigating a difficult period. It is grappling with a range of challenges, including the government's failure to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, high energy costs, rising production expenses, uncertainties in the global market, and the cancellation, withdrawal, or decline in the volume of purchase orders. Meanwhile, the workforce employed in this sector is facing a severe crisis, struggling with rising costs for housing, daily essentials, transportation, and healthcare.
The opposition leader emphasized that to sustain this vital export sector, the government must promptly implement sustainable measures to resolve the various problems currently plaguing it.
The Jamaat Ameer noted that if an uninterrupted power supply is ensured and production momentum is restored, it would be possible to address and resolve these issues systematically.
He added that the survival of the industry is essential not only for the owners but for the nation as a whole. Therefore, the government must take a responsible role in safeguarding both the industrial entrepreneurs and the workforce.
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman further urged all parties to exercise restraint and act with a sense of responsibility from their respective positions. Any failure in this regard could push the country’s already fragile economy to the brink of total collapse. There is no room for delay.
