Bangladesh, Pakistan sign 1 deal and 5 MoUs
Bangla Press Desk: Bangladesh and Pakistan on Sunday signed one bilateral agreement on visa-free travel by diplomatic and government passport holders and five memorandums of understanding (MoU). Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain and Pakistan Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar oversaw the signing process on behalf of their respective countries at a Dhaka hotel. Ishaq Dar, also Pakistan’s deputy prime minister, addressed reporters after the bilateral meeting. When asked about the 1971 war crimes, Ishaq Dar said the issue was “settled” under the 1974 Tripartite Agreement and when late Pakistan President Gen Parvez Musharraf visited Bangladesh in 2002.
He called for following the teachings of Islam which promotes keeping “a clear mind in brotherly relations.” Instead of bringing up the “same issue repeatedly,” the two sides should work on advancing ties, the Pakistan deputy prime minister said. Under the 1974 agreement, signed by Bangladesh, Pakistan and India in New Delhi, the three countries agreed to normalize ties among them. Pakistan agreed to “regret” its dark role in the Bangladesh Liberation War, but stopped short of offering a formal apology. In July 2002, then Pakistan President General Parvez Musharraf, visited Dhaka and was warmly received by the BNP-led government. During the visit, he paid tributes to the war memorial in Savar. In a message written in the visitors' book, he reiterated Pakistan’s regret for “the excesses committed during the unfortunate period.”
"Your brothers and sisters in Pakistan share the pain of the events in 1971," he added, calling on Bangladesh to “bury the past in the spirit of magnanimity.” Some international media outlets claimed the messages amounted to “an implicit apology,” the first by a Pakistan military ruler.
