Staff Reporter: In light of the country’s current situation, Chief Adviser of the caretaker government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has expressed deep frustration and disappointment. He reportedly questioned the value of remaining in his post if he is unable to carry out his responsibilities effectively.
On Thursday (May 22), following a regular meeting of the Advisory Council, Professor Yunus engaged in an unscheduled discussion with other advisers regarding the overall state of the country. During the conversation, he voiced his concerns and dissatisfaction.
Later in the day, Nahid Islam, convenor of the National Citizens Party (NCP), met with the chief adviser at his residence in Jamuna. After the meeting, Nahid Islam told a media outlet that Professor Yunus is “considering resignation.”
According to several sources present at the council meeting, Professor Yunus had an extended discussion with the advisers about a range of challenges, including the daily road blockades in Dhaka due to protests, the lack of political consensus on reforms, and various forms of non-cooperation in state affairs. At one point, he reportedly said he was unable to function properly and questioned why he should continue in the position if progress, particularly on reforms, remains stagnant.
The sources further revealed that during the meeting, the chief adviser suggested that the advisers consider forming a new caretaker government, as he wishes to step down. He also expressed doubts about the possibility of holding a free and fair election under the current circumstances. Yunus reportedly questioned whether the police and administration would be able to prevent ballot snatching and other irregularities during the election, and added that he fears being held personally responsible if the election fails to meet public expectations.
Meeting sources also indicated that the chief adviser proposed addressing the nation to publicly speak about the lack of cooperation from various quarters. A draft of such a speech was even prepared, though no final decision was made. Further discussions on the matter may take place later.
