Chief Whip Orders OC to Take Action Against Extortionists
Bangla Press Desk: National Parliament Chief Whip and Barguna-2 MP Md Nurul Islam Moni has issued strict instructions to the officer-in-charge (OC) of Patharghata Police Station to crack down on extortion and criminal activities.
He gave the directives while addressing a development and law-and-order meeting at the Patharghata Upazila Parishad conference room at 11am on Friday (October 16). Patharghata OC Md Abdul Alim was present at the meeting.
Addressing the OC, the Chief Whip said, “If you cannot eliminate juvenile gangs within the next two months, you will not remain in your post.” He also instructed the police officer to take tough action against members of juvenile gangs, saying no such gangs would be allowed to operate in the area.
“There is no place for extortion in Patharghata. OC, I am telling you here that when it comes to extortion, either you will stay or the extortionists will,” Moni said, adding that criminals and land grabbers would not be allowed to operate in the area.
The Chief Whip also directed the OC to arrest a man named Auwal, who allegedly used Moni’s name to collect extortion money by claiming he could arrange various activities. Moni said Auwal and another person were currently absconding and instructed police to arrest Auwal and show him arrested in the relevant case.
“There is no place for extortionists and criminals. Criminals do not belong to any party,” he said.
Addressing those present, Moni urged people to inform him if anyone used his name to grab land or engage in other illegal activities. He said people could send him messages by phone, which he usually checked at night.
He also warned Coast Guard informants to be cautious, saying he would have people arrested if necessary. Alleging that some individuals were acting as brokers at the police station, he called for an end to such practices.
Warning against illegal fishing trawling
Addressing Coast Guard officials and other administration representatives, Moni raised concerns about trawling by fishing vessels at sea. He alleged that trawling began after midnight, when magistrates had left, and ice factories started operating.
He said trawling would not be permitted in Patharghata, even if it took place elsewhere in Bangladesh, and urged those still engaged in the practice in the area to stop.
Chief Whip highlights PM’s focus on ordinary people
Speaking about Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, Moni said the premier lived like an ordinary person and focused on the difficulties faced by common people.
He cited the challenges faced by fishermen living on coastal chars, farmers in distress, families unable to afford their daughters’ weddings, and educated young people struggling to find suitable employment.
According to Moni, the Prime Minister considers how to help vulnerable people overcome hardship and become self-reliant.
He added that, reflecting this approach, the first decision taken at the Prime Minister’s first Cabinet meeting was to waive farmers’ loans of up to Tk 10,000, including interest, across Bangladesh.
