Crimes against humanity suspects to lose eligibility for elections, public office
Bangla Press Desk:  Individuals formally charged with crimes against humanity will no longer be eligible to contest elections or hold any public office, including government service, under a new decision by the interim government. The decision was made at a meeting of the Advisory Council chaired by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on Thursday. Briefing reporters afterward at the Foreign Service Academy, Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said that Section 23 has been added to the International Crimes Tribunal Act 1973. According to the newly inserted provision, any person against whom a formal charge is filed under Section 9(1) of the Act will be disqualified from being elected or continuing as a member of parliament.
“Similarly, such an accused person will be ineligible to be elected or to remain as a member of a local government body, commissioner, chairman, mayor, or administrator,” said Shafiqul. “They will also be disqualified from recruitment to government service or holding any other public office,” he added. In the same meeting, the government also approved the “Policy for Establishing Renewable Energy-Based Commercial Power Plants with Private Participation 2025.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
