Faruk Ahmed, the new Director General of SRB
Bangla Press Desk: Faruk Ahmed, an Additional Inspector General of Police (Additional IGP) currently serving with the Highway Police, has been appointed as the new Director General (DG) of the Special Response Battalion (SRB). Concurrently, Israil Howlader, Commissioner of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police (holding the rank of Additional IGP), has been assigned the role of Chief of the Industrial Police.
These reshuffles in key police positions were announced in a notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs on Tuesday (November 3).
Faruk Ahmed, an officer from the 17th batch of the BCS (Police) cadre, hails from the village of Kaidala (Ranbagha) in the Nandigram Upazila of Bogura district. Throughout his long career, he has earned a reputation as an honest, efficient, and professional police officer.
Despite being an exceptionally honest, talented, and hardworking officer, he was denied promotions during the tenure of the previous Awami League government—a situation attributed to political considerations. In 2009, just 17 days after he assumed the position of Superintendent of Police (SP) for Mymensingh district, he was removed from his post following the intervention of the then-President, Zillur Rahman.
Following the political transition on August 5, 2024, and the subsequent promotions and reshuffles within the upper echelons of the police force, he was promoted from the rank of Superintendent of Police. He was subsequently appointed as an Additional Commissioner (Administration) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), where he demonstrated both administrative competence and professionalism. Later, he was transferred from the DMP to the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB).
On June 4, the current government promoted five Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs) of police—including Faruk Ahmed—to the rank of Additional IGP. On June 7, they were formally adorned with the rank badges of their new positions at the Police Headquarters.
Most recently, on June 28, the Public Security Division of the Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification transferring Faruk Ahmed from his role as Additional Director General (ADG) of the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) to the position of Additional IGP of the Highway Police.
