Letter sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs to confiscate the assets of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal
BanglaPress Desk: The prosecution has sent a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs to initiate the execution of a court order for the confiscation of assets belonging to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal—both of whom have been sentenced to death for crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising in July 2024.
Chief Prosecutor Md. Aminul Islam announced this during a briefing at his office at the tribunal on Tuesday afternoon. He added that similar letters would also be issued regarding nine other individuals, including Obaidul Quader.
The Chief Prosecutor stated, "We are sending a letter to the Ministry of Home Affairs today to enforce the confiscation of assets belonging to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. Furthermore, we will continue to send letters to the Ministry to ensure the implementation of other tribunal rulings that mandate the confiscation of assets."
In the letter addressed to the Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs regarding the confiscation of Sheikh Hasina’s assets, it is noted that on November 17, 2025, International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced the fugitive defendant, Sheikh Hasina, to death for crimes against humanity. The tribunal also ordered the confiscation of all her assets, to be distributed as compensation to the families of the July martyrs and other victims.
The tribunal’s verdict directed the Ministry of Home Affairs to take the necessary steps to execute the asset confiscation order. The letter warns that unless all movable and immovable properties of the fugitive convict, Sheikh Hasina, are immediately brought under government control, she could potentially utilize, sell, or otherwise transfer these assets—thereby rendering the tribunal’s confiscation order ineffective. In these circumstances, you are urgently requested to immediately compile a comprehensive list of all movable and immovable assets belonging to the convicted fugitive, Sheikh Hasina. Furthermore, you are requested to take the necessary steps to bring these assets under state control and, in accordance with the Tribunal’s order, distribute them as compensation to the families of those martyred and the victims of the July 2024 mass uprising.
Confiscation of Assets of Sheikh Hasina and Kamal
The International Crimes Tribunal-1 has sentenced the ousted Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, and the former Home Minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, to death for crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising of July–August 2024. In the same case, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun—who turned state’s witness—was sentenced to five years of imprisonment.
In this historic verdict delivered on November 17, 2025, by the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-1, led by Justice Md. Golam Mortuza Majumdar, the court ordered the confiscation of the assets of Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, directing that the proceeds be used to provide appropriate compensation to the families of the martyrs and those who sustained injuries.
Confiscation of Half the Assets of Five Accused, Including Quader
On September 15, the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced seven individuals—including Obaidul Quader, General Secretary of the now-banned Awami League—to death in connection with crimes against humanity committed during the mass uprising of July–August 2024.
The other individuals sentenced to death include: A.F.M. Bahauddin Nasim, Joint General Secretary of the banned Awami League; Mohammad Ali Arafat, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting; Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, Chairman of the banned Jubo League; Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, General Secretary of the banned Jubo League; as well as Saddam Hossain, Central President of the banned Chhatra League, and Sheikh Wali Asif Inan, Central General Secretary of the banned Chhatra League.
All of the accused remain at large. In a verdict delivered by the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-2, presided over by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, the tribunal ordered the confiscation of half of all movable and immovable assets belonging to several individuals: Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader, Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League Chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, and Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil—all of whose organizations are currently banned. The tribunal directed that the proceeds from the sale of these confiscated assets be used to provide appropriate compensation to those killed or injured during the July-August 2024 uprising, or to their families, through the 'July Foundation' or another statutory institution.
Confiscation of half the assets of four accused, including Hanif
The International Crimes Tribunal has sentenced Mahbub Ul Alam Hanif—Joint General Secretary of the now-banned Awami League—to death for crimes against humanity, specifically the killing of six individuals in Kushtia during the mass uprising in July 2024. In the same case, three other accused—Sador Uddin Khan (President of the banned Kushtia District Awami League and former Chairman of the District Council), Asgar Ali (General Secretary of the banned Kushtia District Awami League), and Ataur Rahman (General Secretary of the banned Kushtia Municipal Awami League)—were sentenced to imprisonment for the remainder of their natural lives.
In the verdict delivered on October 29 by the three-member International Crimes Tribunal-2, led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury, it was ordered that half of the immovable assets of all the convicted individuals be confiscated.
