Forecast of 6 cold waves in December-January
BanglaPress Desk: There is a possibility of multiple cold waves hitting the country this December and next January. During these two months, the country may experience four to six mild to moderate cold waves, with two to three of them potentially intensifying into severe cold waves. This information was provided in a long-term forecast released by the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Wednesday (November 4).
According to the forecast, two to four low-pressure areas may form over the Bay of Bengal between now and January. There is a risk that one or two of these could develop into cyclones. During this period, both daytime and nighttime temperatures across the country may remain above normal. However, from late night until morning, moderate to dense fog is expected in various parts of the country, particularly along river basins, while other areas may experience light to moderate fog.
The Meteorological Department notes that dense fog could reduce the temperature gap between day and night; consequently, even if temperatures remain relatively high, the intensity of the cold may be felt more acutely.
Intensity of Cold Waves
According to the Meteorological Department’s forecast, the classification of a cold wave is determined by temperature ranges. During a mild cold wave, temperatures may drop to between 8°C and 10°C. A moderate cold wave involves temperatures ranging from 6°C to 8°C, while a severe cold wave can see temperatures fall to between 4°C and 6°C.
As a result, various regions of the country may experience both an increase in the intensity of the cold and the impact of dense fog throughout December and January.
