Prime Minister to inaugurate projects worth 4,068 crore taka in Mongla
BanglaPress Desk: Prime Minister Tareq Rahman is set to visit Mongla Port to inaugurate the construction of two new container jetties, a yard, and associated infrastructure, a project with an estimated cost of 4,068 crore BDT. He is scheduled to arrive in Mongla on Thursday (November 5).
Previously, on October 22, the Prime Minister visited the port to assess the potential for its development and expansion.
Rear Admiral Arif Ahmed Mostafa, Chairman of the Mongla Port Authority, informed the media that the Prime Minister will inaugurate the construction of two new container jetties and a yard as part of the port’s modernization and expansion project. The Prime Minister signed the development agreement for this project during a recent visit to China. Subsequently, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and a loan agreement were signed between Bangladesh and China on October 10, which serve as the basis for this inauguration.
He noted that under this 4,068 crore BDT project, in addition to the construction of the two new container jetties and a container yard, 49 pieces of modern equipment for cargo handling and transport will be added. The Government of Bangladesh will contribute 475 crore BDT toward the total project cost, with the remainder to be financed by the relevant Chinese entity.
Meanwhile, Md. Zulfikar Ali, General Secretary of the Mongla Port Berth & Ship Operators Association, has highlighted several key requirements to enhance the port's capacity. He emphasized the need for planned dredging and regular maintenance to improve the navigability of the port channel, the development of road and rail connectivity, the operationalization of the Foyla Airport, and the expedited construction of an LNG station at the port’s Akram Point. Implementing these initiatives would provide significant benefits to port users.
State Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Lion Dr. Sheikh Faridul Islam, informed the media that, in addition to inaugurating the construction of the two new container jetties—to be built by a Chinese firm—the Prime Minister will also oversee the signing of a railway-related agreement between 'Invest Bangladesh' and the China Railway Construction Corporation. He stated that the implementation of this agreement will facilitate the launch of rail services for transporting containers from Mongla Port. This is expected to boost interest among business operators and create new prospects for both domestic and foreign investment at the port.
