Maxwell retires from international cricket

BanglaPress Desk: Glenn Maxwell’s journey in an Australian jersey has come to an end. Following his exclusion from the squad for the upcoming T20 series against England, he announced his retirement.

The 38-year-old all-rounder had already retired from ODIs and has not played a Test match since 2017. He was part of the squad for the T20 World Cup in February, but has now bid farewell to all forms of cricket. Speaking on *The Final Word* podcast, Maxwell shared details of his discussions with the team management, stating, "We had several conversations before and after the World Cup. The discussions were very open. There was no pressure from the Australian management; we simply decided to keep the door open."

He added, "There were a few series coming up, and the team wanted to look toward the future—something we saw during the tour of Bangladesh in June, where young players were given opportunities and performed very well."

However, he does harbor one small regret. "I had a faint hope that I might get a farewell match at the MCG," Maxwell admitted. "But I fully understand the direction the team is taking."

Known as "The Big Show," Maxwell was one of the world’s most explosive batters and an exceptional fielder. He will continue to play in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Stars. Over the course of his career, he represented Australia in 149 ODIs, 130 T20Is, and seven Test matches.

Maxwell has also retired from state-level cricket. Graham Manou, General Manager of High Performance for Victoria, praised his contributions, stating, "Glenn has made an outstanding contribution to Victorian cricket for over 16 years." "There is no doubt that he is one of the most talented players to have ever played for our state."

He added, "His ability to turn the tide of a match—whether with the bat, the ball, or in the field—was extraordinary. The mindset with which he played—so freely and with such confidence—set him apart in Australian cricket."

Manou concluded, "Beyond his on-field performances, Glenn was part of a highly successful era for Victoria. We thank him for all his contributions to the program."
