Bangla Press Desk: The Met office has warned that up to two low-pressure systems are likely to form over the Bay of Bengal in the month of May, with one likely to intensify into a depression or cyclone.
In its monthly outlook released on Sunday, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department said a severe heatwave (40-41.9 degrees Celsius) is likely to sweep across the country this month.Rainfall is expected to remain normal nationwide, although light to moderate thunderstorms may occur on five to eight days. Of these, two to three days could see severe thunderstorms accompanied by hail in parts of the country.
The monthly outlook also indicates that up to three mild (36-37.9 degrees Celsius) or moderate (38-39.9 degrees Celsius) heatwaves may occur, one of which could escalate into a severe heatwave.
In addition, day and night temperatures are expected to be normal over the country.
The country's major rivers are likely to flow normally in May. However, due to isolated heavy rainfall, the water levels of rivers in the northern, northeastern, and southeastern parts of the country may increase temporarily, the BMD said.
According to the Met office, above-normal rainfall (+75.7%) was recorded across the country in April. Rajshahi division experienced normal rainfall, while all other divisions recorded above-normal levels, it added.
