Bangla Press Desk: Andy Burnham, the former mayor of Greater Manchester, has been elected as the new leader of the UK's Labour Party. He took the leadership of the Labour Party in the final step of taking over as the country's prime minister.
After announcing the new leader of the party, Burnham said that he was fully prepared to defeat Britain's new right and return power to ordinary people.
The Guardian reported that Andy Burnham was officially announced as the leader of the Labour Party at a special party conference at the TUC headquarters in London on Friday (July 17).
The announcement was made by Shabana Mahmood, the head of the party's executive committee and one of the contenders for the position of finance minister. Burnham, who will replace outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, has received unwavering support from party MPs, trade unions and all branches.
In an emotional speech after taking over the leadership, Burnham said that the country is now yearning for a new politics. However, he warned the party that this was the Labour Party's last chance for change and that this change would have to be made by uniting the party.
Praising the contribution of outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer, he said that under Starmer's leadership, the Labour Party was able to achieve one of the greatest victories in history. However, he called on everyone to work together, avoiding internal conflicts in the party.
In his speech, Burnham hinted at the outline of his future politics and said that he wanted to return power to the local people, not just London or Westminster.
In addition to providing business-friendly leadership, he also emphasized the construction of social housing and the rehabilitation of the homeless. At the same time, he pledged to rise above regional narrowness and work for the whole of the United Kingdom, including Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The rest of the process will be completed after Keir Starmer officially submits his resignation to King Charles next Monday (July 20). Then, Andy Burnham will officially take office as the country's new Prime Minister from Buckingham Palace on Monday afternoon.
After taking office, he is expected to address the nation outside Downing Street and form his new cabinet.
