No force in the world can delay polls
Bangla Press Desk:   Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Sunday the interim government believes that unity among political parties is essential for the greater interest of national security, and that despite any conspiracies, no force in the world can delay the country’s upcoming parliamentary election. “When the fascist forces see that the country is moving towards elections and the trial of those involved in the July murders is progressing rapidly, they are becoming reckless. As a result, they are mobilising all their might to disrupt democratic progress and destroy the country’s peace. This is no longer just a law and order situation; it has become a national security issue,” he said during a press briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. He briefed journalists on the minutes of the advisory council meeting of the interim government, chaired by Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus at the State Guest House Jamuna. According to the press secretary, the meeting reviewed the country’s prevailing law and order situation, discussed the overall national scenario, and took several decisions in light of current developments.
Ten advisers attended, including those responsible for home, planning, power, law, shipping, finance, industries, local government, and security affairs. Shafiqul Alam noted that the meeting was held in response to several incidents in recent days. “Strict instructions have been given to the local administration to deal with such incidents more firmly,” he said. “It was emphasised in the meeting that no concession, however minimal, will be made in the interest of the country’s overall security,” he added. The press secretary also reiterated the government’s belief that unity among political parties is crucial for the nation’s greater interest.
“The meeting stressed the need to maintain the political unity achieved ahead of July. Everyone has been asked to remain vigilant to prevent any security concerns before the election. Emphasis was placed on fostering closer relations between political parties in these matters,” he said. In recent days, leaders and activists of the currently banned Awami League and its affiliated organisations have held flash processions in several areas of Dhaka, including Tejgaon, leading to multiple arrests by the police. Various criminal incidents have also occurred across the country, including the attack and vandalism of the Darbar Sharif of Nurul Haque, also known as Nural Pagla, in Goalanda Upazila of Rajbari, and the exhumation and burning of his body. Shafiqul Alam said the meeting decided to strengthen monitoring of illegal gatherings, including sudden processions, and promised strict legal action against those involved.
He also reaffirmed that the next general election will be held in February next year, in line with the interim government’s commitment. “The election will be held in the first half of February. There is no force in the world that can delay it,” he said. The press secretary added that the Chief Adviser also warned of potential conspiracies to create unrest during the upcoming Durga Puja. “Durga Puja was celebrated last year with good law and order management. This year too, we must use that experience and take all necessary security measures in advance to prevent any chaos,” he quoted the Chief Adviser as saying. The Religious Ministry has been directed to meet with all faith-based organizations in the country to maintain communal harmony. The ministry adviser will soon hold discussions with these groups, Shafiqul Alam said.
He added that emphasis has been placed on round-the-clock monitoring of the law and order situation and enhancing coordination between law enforcement agencies. Regarding the recent incident in Rajbari, Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said, “So far, seven people have been arrested. Among them, at least two are linked to local Awami League politics. Video footage is being reviewed, and police have confirmed that action will be taken against all those involved.” This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
