No reason for concern over election: Asif Nazrul
Bangla Press Desk: Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Adviser Asif Nazrul said on Sunday that there is no reason to worry about the upcoming national parliamentary election.
He also emphasised that the government is committed to holding the polls in the first half of February.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting with judges at the Legal Aid Office of the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court building in Rajshahi, Asif Nazrul said, “There is no issue of postponing the election. The national parliamentary election will certainly take place. Everything necessary will be done to create a festive environment.”
He added that political parties often make statements to put pressure on each other or on the advisers, and while some of these claims may have truth, they tend to create public concern over the election.
“People have not experienced elections for 16–17 years, so some apprehension exists. Five million citizens have never voted before, which makes this election particularly significant for them.
The general public is eagerly waiting for the election, and there is growing enthusiasm among them,” he said.
Addressing questions about bail, Nazrul noted that it does not depend solely on the judge.
“It also depends on whether the police submit a report. Exceptions arise when evidence appears on video or when statements are recorded,” he said.
He added, “Where bail is warranted, it can be granted. However, if someone on bail is likely to commit the same crime again, threaten law and order, or act as a member of a banned organisation, granting excessive bail would be alarming.
To reduce case pressure, three judges are being assigned instead of one, and we are taking various initiatives to reform the courts. The people will definitely benefit from these efforts.”
