Observers say DUCSU elections ‘mismanaged’
Bangla Press Desk: The Dhaka University Teachers’ Network has observed that while there were some irregularities and mismanagement during this year’s DUCSU election, the polls could not be termed unacceptable. Professor Gitiara Nasreen presented the observations at a press conference in front of the returning officers’ office at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban on Tuesday night. Professor Gitiara Nasreen said, “It was an unprecedented election as we have not seen such participation in years. We noticed some flaws and mismanagement, but no major irregularities. At no point did we feel the election was unacceptable.” She hoped the next election, expected within a year, would be more transparent. “If preparations, including academic leave, are ensured earlier, student participation will increase. Then DUCSU will be able to carry out its responsibilities properly,” she added.
Professor Samina Luthfa pointed out mismanagement and lack of transparency. She mentioned poor information flow, a shortage of polling agents, and a delay in distributing passes. “In some centres we even found pre-marked ballots. The recruitment of polling officers was also non-transparent,” she said. She added that polling was slow in Jagannath Hall and TSC. Arguments with polling officials and poor crowd control affected the pace. Rules were also applied inconsistently across centres. The network said election officials were not adequately trained, and manpower was short. “Perhaps no one expected a 78 percent turnout. That created huge pressure,” Prof Luthfa said. Despite these issues, the Teachers’ Network congratulated students for the massive turnout. They said confidence in the election could have been higher if the irregularities had been avoided.
Other members present at the press conference included Prof Asif Mohammad Shahan of Development Studies, Associate Prof Tahmina Khanam of Management, Associate Prof Mosahida Sultana of Accounting, Associate Prof Tasnim Siraj Mahbub of English, and Assistant Prof Marzia Rahman of Mass Communication and Journalism.
