Prisons begin dope tests to keep jails drug-free
Bangla Press Desk:   The Directorate of Prisons has launched dope testing for inmates, visitors and prison staff in a bid to keep the country’s jails free from drugs. Assistant Inspector General of Prisons (Administration) Abul Bashar confirmed the development on Tuesday, saying that the initiative is a part of observing September as the “Anti-Drug Month” across Bangladesh prisons. “Drug abuse has now become a global concern, and Bangladesh’s socio-economic context is no exception. To ensure drug-free prisons, we have intensified our campaign under a zero-tolerance policy”, said Bashar. He added that anti-narcotics drives are being conducted with the support of local prison authorities, district administration and the Department of Narcotics Control.
Key measures include special searches of inmates, visitors and prison officials at entry points, awareness campaigns inside prisons and dope testing of suspected prisoners and staff under the prison authority’s own arrangements. “Drug abusers are being identified through dope tests and placed under strict surveillance and administrative action”, said Bashar. He further said that inspired by the motto “Rakhbo Nirapod, Dekhabo Alor Poth” (Will keep it safe, show the path of light), the Directorate of Prisons is not only committed to eliminating drugs but also to rehabilitating misguided individuals and transforming them into skilled human resources.  This article was originally published on Daily Sun.
