Storm in Jamalpur claims lives of mother and two daughters
Bangla Press Desk: A woman and her two daughters were killed after a Nor’wester struck Melandaha upazila of Jamalpur in the early hours of Monday.
The victims were identified as Khuki Begum, 65, wife of the late Gani Mandal of Dagi area, and her daughters Farida Akhter, 40, and Fateh Akhter, 37.According to Melandaha Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Jinnatul Ara, a tree collapsed onto their tin-shed house at around 3:30am in Purba Dagi village as the storm swept through the area.
Local residents and fire service officials said the three were asleep when strong winds and heavy gusts battered the locality during the night.
At one stage, a large mahogany tree adjacent to the house was uprooted and crashed onto the structure, killing them on the spot.Rescue operations were initially hampered by adverse weather conditions, police said.
Later in the morning, police and fire service personnel, assisted by locals, recovered the bodies from the debris.
The UNO said the bereaved family would receive Tk75,000 in government assistance.
