Teen gang chops off NCP leader’s finger in Banani
Bangla Press Desk: A teenage gang has severed a finger of Abdur Rahman Rakib, a leader of the National Citizens Party (NCP) and a participant in the July Movement, following a dispute in the capital’s Banani.
He was admitted to a city hospital in critical condition.
Rakib told reporters on Thursday (6 November) that the attack took place the previous day at his residence in Banani’s Korail area. “Local gang members — Rabbi, Pichchi Shakil, Tamim, Alaudin Alo, and Nakib —stormed my home with sharp weapons. One of the assailants struck me with a machete, severing my left little finger,” he said.
Locals said Tamim is the son of fugitive Awami League leader Mohammad Ali.
Family sources said, “A few months ago, Rabbi and his accomplices were caught stealing from Rakib’s business. After a local arbitration fined them, Rabbi reportedly threatened revenge. The gang had also been mocking Rakib over the NCP and its Shapla symbol in recent weeks.”
Rakib said the attack stemmed from previous enmity. “My younger brother and I took part in the July Movement. Since 5 August, they had been issuing threats. On Wednesday afternoon, they came armed with machetes and sticks and attacked my home,” he recounted, adding that the attackers also threatened to kill his family before leaving.
Banani Police Station Officer-in-Charge Russel Sarowar said, “We are aware of the incident. The victim is undergoing treatment. Legal action will be taken once a written complaint is filed.”
