Bangla Press Desk: A young man was killed after being run over by the intercity Titumir Express train at Akkelpur Railway Station in Joypurhat on Tuesday morning.
The deceased was identified as Ashraful Islam, 23, son of Abul Hossain of Shahagra village in Debiganj Upazila of Panchagarh district.
He worked as a mason in Rajshahi, and appears to have committed suicide, said Santahar Railway Police Station (GRP) Officer-in-Charge (OC) Habibur Rahman.
The accident occurred at around 10:30am on Railway Line No 1, on the northern side of Akkelpur Railway Station.
According to eyewitnesses, the Chilahati-bound Titumir Express, which had departed from Rajshahi, was leaving the station after a scheduled stop.
At the time, Ashraful was standing beside the railway tracks near the northern end of the platform. At one point, he reportedly went underneath the rear section of the moving train. Within moments, he was struck by the train and run over, causing his head to be severed from his body. He died instantly at the scene.
Following the accident, his body was found lying beside the railway track.
“Preliminarily, the incident appears to be a case of suicide. Police have been dispatched to the scene. The body will be recovered and an inquest report prepared. After completing the necessary legal procedures, the body will be handed over to the family,” OC Habibur Rahman said.
Legal proceedings in connection with the incident are underway, he added.
